How it works
Every conversion here runs through a base unit. For length the base is the meter, for weight the kilogram, for volume the liter and for speed the meter per second: the input is converted into the base unit using an exact definition (a mile is exactly 1.609344 km, a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg), then converted out into the target unit. Using base units means all 100-plus unit pairs in a category share one consistent table instead of a separate formula per pair, so results can never contradict each other. Temperature is the exception, because its scales have offsets as well as ratios: conversions route through Celsius using C = (F - 32) x 5/9 and K = C + 273.15. Results are shown with up to six significant decimal places, trimmed so everyday answers stay readable. A note on variants: this converter uses United States customary units, so a gallon is the US liquid gallon (3.785 liters), not the larger imperial gallon. For cooking, travel, shipping and science homework these definitions cover the conversions people actually need day to day.
Frequently asked questions
What is the exact conversion for inches to centimeters?
One inch is exactly 2.54 cm by international agreement since 1959, which makes a foot exactly 0.3048 m and a mile exactly 1.609344 km. Conversions using these definitions are exact, not approximations.
How do you convert Fahrenheit to Celsius by hand?
Subtract 32, multiply by 5, divide by 9. Reverse it by multiplying by 9, dividing by 5 and adding 32. This tool handles temperature with the same formulas, including Kelvin offsets.
Are these US or imperial units?
Gallons, fluid ounces and several other units differ between the US and the older British imperial system. This converter uses US customary units throughout.
Why do metric conversions feel easier?
Metric units scale by powers of ten, so multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 stays within one system, while customary units use historical ratios like 12 inches per foot and 16 ounces per pound.
