How Overtime Pay Works

Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must be paid at least one and one-half times their regular hourly rate for every hour worked beyond 40 in a workweek. That premium — commonly called “time and a half” — is the federal minimum, and many employers apply the same rule to daily or weekly overtime.

Double time, or twice the regular hourly rate, is not required by federal law. It is usually a matter of employer policy or state law instead. In California, for example, non-exempt employees must be paid double their regular rate for hours worked beyond 12 in a single day.

The basic formula is simple: overtime pay = hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours. Add that figure to your regular pay (hourly rate × regular hours) and you have your total gross pay for the period. Try it above — the calculator updates live as you type.

Overtime FAQs

What is time and a half for $20 an hour?
Time and a half for $20 an hour is $30 per hour. Multiply the regular rate by 1.5: $20 × 1.5 = $30. So five overtime hours at that rate would earn you $150 in overtime pay.
Is overtime taxed differently?
No. Overtime is taxed as ordinary income at your normal tax rates — there is no special “overtime tax”. Tax withholding on a bigger payslip can look higher, but your actual tax liability does not change just because the pay was earned as overtime.
Does California have daily overtime?
Yes. In California, non-exempt employees earn 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked over 8 in a single day, and 2× (double time) for hours worked over 12 in a day.
What is double time pay?
Double time pay is twice your regular hourly rate (a 2× multiplier). It is typically paid after 12 hours in a day or for work on holidays, depending on your employer’s policy or state law.
