How it works
Word counting sounds mechanical, but the details matter when a limit is strict. This counter counts words as sequences separated by whitespace, which matches how Word and Google Docs treat hyphenated line breaks and pasted content closely enough for essays, articles and applications. Characters are reported two ways: with spaces, which is what most submission limits (including social posts and meta descriptions) actually measure, and without spaces for character-based pricing such as translation quotes. Sentences are detected by ending punctuation, paragraphs by blank lines, so dialogue-heavy and list-heavy text can shift the sentence count slightly; treat it as a close estimate. Reading time uses an average silent-reading speed of about 200 words per minute, and speaking time uses roughly 130 words per minute, the comfortable pace for podcasts, speeches and video narration. A 1,300-word script is therefore about a 10-minute talk. Everything runs in your browser: your text is never uploaded, stored or sent to a server, which makes the tool safe for unpublished drafts and sensitive documents.
Frequently asked questions
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time assumes an average adult speed of about 200 words per minute for silent reading; speaking time assumes about 130 words per minute, typical for presentations and narration.
Does the word count include spaces in the character count?
Yes, both totals are shown. Character counts include letters, numbers, punctuation and spaces unless you read the without-spaces figure.
How are sentences counted?
Text is split on periods, exclamation marks and question marks. Abbreviations and decimals can make the count approximate, as with any automatic counter.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything is counted locally in your browser, so drafts, essays and unpublished work never leave your device.
