Savings Goal Calculator
Saving for a house deposit, a car or an emergency fund starts with knowing the finish line. Enter your goal, what you have saved so far and your monthly contribution, and this calculator tells you how many months it will take and how much of the final amount comes from interest.

How it works
This calculator simulates your savings month by month. Each month, your balance grows by one twelfth of the annual return, then your monthly contribution is added, until the balance reaches the goal. Working forward like this handles interest correctly without requiring a formula, and it is why a return shortens the timeline in two ways: your existing savings grow on their own, and every contribution starts earning as soon as it lands. With a zero return, the math reduces to (goal - current savings) / monthly contribution, rounded up to whole months. Small increases in the monthly contribution often beat optimistic return assumptions, because they are fully under your control: raising a contribution from $300 to $400 toward a $20,000 goal cuts the timeline by many months regardless of market performance. The projection assumes a steady return and regular end-of-month contributions, with no withdrawals, taxes or fees. If the answer comes out longer than your deadline, the honest levers are a bigger monthly contribution, a larger starting amount, or a later target date, not a higher hoped-for return.
Frequently asked questions
How long will it take to save for a goal?
Short-term goals are usually funded with regular transfers. With a constant monthly contribution and no investment return, time to goal is simply the remaining amount divided by the monthly contribution.
How does an investment return change the answer?
It earns returns on your existing savings and on every contribution, shortening the timeline. The calculator simulates month by month, crediting monthly growth at the annual return divided by 12.
What if the result takes longer than I want?
Try increasing the monthly contribution in the calculator and watch the timeline shrink. Shortening the goal usually means either saving more per month or extending the deadline.
Is the return guaranteed?
Neither model is perfect. This calculator assumes a smooth average return, so treat the timeline as a planning estimate rather than a guarantee.
