How it works
All conversions run through annual pay. An hourly wage is multiplied by hours per week and then by 52 weeks. A weekly salary is multiplied by 52, a biweekly salary by 26 (there are 26 two-week periods in a year, not 24), and a monthly salary by 12. Once the annual figure is known, every other unit is derived from it: monthly is annual divided by 12, biweekly is annual divided by 26, weekly is annual divided by 52, and hourly is annual divided by your total yearly work hours (hours per week times 52). The most common mistakes are treating a month as exactly four weeks and assuming two paychecks per month means 24 biweekly periods per year; in reality, months average about 4.33 weeks and there are 26 biweekly periods, which is why two months a year contain three biweekly paychecks. These figures are gross pay before taxes and deductions. They also assume full-time, year-round work with no unpaid time off; if you take unpaid leave, reduce the weeks accordingly. For a standard full-time schedule of 40 hours per week, the yearly total is 2,080 work hours.
Frequently asked questions
How many work hours are in a year?
A full-time schedule of 40 hours per week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours per year. Part-time schedules scale proportionally.
Why are there 26 biweekly periods, not 24?
A year has 52 weeks, and 52 divided by 2 is 26. Two months each year will contain three biweekly paychecks instead of two.
Is semimonthly the same as biweekly?
No. Semimonthly means twice a month (24 paychecks a year, usually on the 1st and 15th). Biweekly means every two weeks (26 paychecks a year).
Does this show take-home pay?
No, this converts gross pay between periods. Taxes, benefits and other deductions reduce the amount you actually receive.
