How it works

This calculator runs the standard descriptive statistics over your list. The mean (average) is the sum divided by the count, sensitive to every value including outliers. The median is the middle value after sorting, or the average of the two middle values when the count is even; because it ignores extremes, it better represents a typical value in skewed data such as incomes or house prices. The mode is the most frequent value; a list can have one mode, several (multimodal) or none if every value appears equally often. The range is simply the maximum minus the minimum, a quick spread measure, while the sum and count confirm the basics of your dataset. Use the mean for roughly symmetric data like test scores from one class, the median when a few huge or tiny values would distort the picture, and the mode for categorical-style data such as the most common shoe size stocked by a store. Parsing is forgiving: paste numbers separated by commas, spaces or line breaks, and anything that is not a number is skipped, so exports from spreadsheets usually work without cleanup.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use the median instead of the mean?

The mean is pulled by outliers; the median is the middle value and resists them. Income statistics use the median because a few very high earners would skew a mean.

How is the median found for an even number of values?

Sort the list and take the middle value. With an even count, average the two middle values, so 1, 2, 3, 4 has a median of 2.5.

What if there is no mode?

If no value repeats, there is no mode, and the calculator says so. If several values tie for most frequent, all of them are modes and are listed together.

What separators can I use?

Commas, spaces and new lines all work as separators. Anything that is not a number is ignored, so pasted lists with labels still calculate cleanly.
